🧃 1-Hour Glucose Screening Test Instructions

  1. Refrigerate the Glucose Drink
Store the 50-gram glucose beverage in the refrigerator to improve taste and ease of consumption.

  2. Eat a Balanced Meal Before the Test
Fasting is not required. Consume a balanced meal before the test, avoiding foods and drinks high in sugar. For example, a breakfast of eggs, whole-wheat toast, and milk is appropriate.

  3. Drink the Glucose Beverage Timely
Consume the entire 50-gram glucose drink within 5 minutes, approximately 45 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Note the exact time you finish the drink.

  4. Avoid Eating or Drinking After the Beverage
Do not eat or drink anything except plain water after consuming the glucose drink until your blood is drawn. Avoid chewing gum, mints, or smoking during this period.

  5. Inform the Front Desk Upon Arrival
Arrive at the clinic at least 10–15 minutes before your scheduled blood draw. Inform the front desk of the exact time you finished drinking the glucose solution to ensure timely blood collection.

  6. Bring a High-Protein Snack for After the Test
After your blood has been drawn, you may eat and drink as usual. Consider bringing a high-protein snack to consume post-test to help stabilize your blood sugar levels.

  • Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything except plain water for at least 8 hours before your appointment. It's recommended to fast overnight and schedule your test for early morning.

  • Fasting Blood Draw: Upon arrival, a blood sample will be taken to measure your fasting blood glucose level.

  • Glucose Beverage: You'll be given a 100-gram glucose drink to consume within 5 minutes. This beverage is very sweet and may be easier to drink if chilled.

3. During the Test

  • Blood Draws: After consuming the glucose drink, your blood will be drawn at 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours to measure glucose levels.

  • Restrictions: Do not eat, smoke, chew gum, or exercise during the test. You may sip plain water if needed.
